It's essential to know the risk factors for P.A.D. (Peripheral Artery Disease). Unfortunately, most people don't. Talk to your doctor to learn more.
In 2006, the P.A.D. Coalition conducted a survey of adults at least 50 years old and
found that among people who were aware of P.A.D., half didn't know diabetes and smoking increase the risk for P.A.D. Half didn't know that high cholesterol and high
blood pressure are risk factors for P.A.D. And, most importantly, the majority didn't
know that P.A.D. can lead to heart attack or stroke.
Get to know some of the common risk factors below. And remember, if you have
even ONE of these risk factors, it's critical to talk to your doctor right away about
P.A.D.
P.A.D. Risk Factors*
Talk to your doctor about getting tested for P.A.D. if:
You're over 50 and have one or more of the following:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoke or used to smoke
- A family history of heart attack or stroke
You're over 70
You have pain in your legs while walking that eases after rest
