You have to know the risk factors. And most people don't.
A 2007 survey of adults at least 50 years old, conducted by the P.A.D. Coalition, showed that among people who were aware of P.A.D., half of them didn't know that diabetes and smoking increase your risk for P.A.D. Half of them didn't know that high cholesterol and high blood pressure are risk factors for P.A.D. And most importantly, perhaps, most people didn't know that P.A.D. can lead to heart attack and stroke.
